In defense of the oatmeal raisin cookie

By Melinda Xu, Web Editor

In the annals of cookie history, the oatmeal raisin has faced unfair slander. Since seemingly the beginning of time, these cookies are often called the worst cookie and unceremoniously placed at the very bottom of the cookie tier list. In my very humble opinion, however, the oatmeal raisin cookie is the best cookie.

Yes, better than even the choccy chip.

I love the texture and chew of the oats. Combined with the raisins and usual dose of cinnamon spice, there is a perfect balance of sweetness that isn't overpowering. What's not to like?

Now of course, all food preferences are highly personal. Growing up, I've always disliked extremely sweet desserts, and have often found most cookies--chocolate chip, white chocolate macadamia nut, sugar cookies--much too saccharine in taste. Furthermore, all other cookie types seemed to lean towards harder, crispier textures, so unlike the soft mouth crumbling experience of biting into an oatmeal raisin cookie. For me, it was only natural to lean towards this oft-ignored treasure.

And despite the disgust I have faced from many of my peers, I must admit there are definitely advantages for favoriting the oatmeal raisin cookie. At parties and club meetings, while others scrambled in their competition to claim the last few chocolate chip cookies, I could slowly savor the oatmeal raisin with complete faith in the fact that there would be more left for me.

So next time you're at that party and all the cookies have long been devoured save for the horrid oatmeal raisin, why don't you try one? Maybe the sweet, soft balance of spice, oats and raisins will get you too. And if not, at least you still got to eat a cookie.
